He Fan’s Cubist Self-Portrait Drawings

Self-Portrait Drawing by He Fan

I really love the shading technique and cubism-inspired style in these drawings by He Fan. They are black-and-white pencil drawings, and they are self-portraits which the artist says are a “reflection of myself during different periods.”

Water is a recurring motif, with one picture showing him drinking from a glass and shows the water going through his transparent body into a pool that he’s standing in. Other images show the artist curled up in a drinking glass, stuck inside what looks like a dumpling or pie, and sitting underneath a giant mask-like version of his own head. I think they capture a mood of shyness or loneliness.

He Fan is from Shanghai, China, where he works for the advertising agency Fred & Farid. I couldn’t find much more information on the artist, but I am interested in seeing more of his work, and I hope he publishes more soon.
