Urban Fabric: Map-Inspired Wool Rug Designs

Forbidden City, Beijng - Urban Fabric Wool Rug by Four O Nine

These gorgeous, abstract rugs are inspired by the landscape of major cities. Urban Fabric is a line of hand-tufted wool rugs made by the design studio Four O Nine, which was founded by Andrei Zerebecky and Lukasz Kos.

I love the way the pattern is raised or embossed on the rug, and it looks like it lends the pieces an interesting texture. The colour choices, ranging from purples for Manhattan to bronze and gold for Beijing’s Forbidden City, are appropriate but subtle enough that they would fit well in a room with modern decor. Most of the pieces are made with just two similar shades, but a rug inspired by the globe’s time zones has a gradient of many shades of grey.

Each piece is inspired by a satellite view of the city, which shows the patterns created by man’s development of agriculture, infrastructure, and architecture. Some of the designs are more recognizable, like Manhattan’s unique coastline, but many of them could appear just as abstract designs at first glance.
