Funny Visual Tricks Abound in “City” Cartoons by Takeuma

Drinking from Straws - City - Art by Takeumaa

Can you find the small visual trick in each of these pictures? Some of them rely on perspective (like a man who appears to be drinking from a straw belonging to the man at another table) or on humorous parallel imagery (a truck is stopped to let a mother cat and kitten cross the road, while the logo on top of the truck is also a mother carrying a kitten). The style is very reminiscent of typical of newspaper comics, with bold lines and halftone (using visible dotted patterns to add shading to a picture). The art is by Takeuma, an illustrator from Kyoto, Japan, and is part of his series City.
