These oil paintings are by Juan Martínez Bengoechea. I’m fascinated by the realism the artist is able to achieve in many of the works. They show people in a wide variety of settings, from fields to city rooftops. The pictures have an old-time feel, with period costumes and scenery, but also have elements of unexpected absurdity (like a nude woman in a carpentry shop or a man standing on a ladder in the middle of the ocean). Animals, such as dogs and sheep, are also a recurring motif in the paintings.
