These tapestries by Erin M. Riley are inspired by the internet culture of sharing erotic “selfies” and webcam images. I find these fiber art works fascinating because they make this softcore pornography even softer and more human, through her surprising choice of medium.
Riley says that while she realizes some people may find her images shocking or misogynistic, these are not her intents. She wishes to portray these moments of nudity and sexuality as normal and something that should not be criticized. She has even created some self portraits in this way.
The artist is attracted to the traditional tools and skills of weaving, and she makes her tapestries from hand-dyed yarn. She lives in Brookyn, New York.
