Philippe Braquenier, a photographer from Brussels, Belgium, explores the concepts of personal property and territorial distinction in his series New Frontier. These photos show landscapes, both urban and rural, with parts of the area blocked off by yellow “caution” or police tape. These images intend to make the viewer question “the social need of fragmentation of space,” according to the artist’s statement that accompanies the work. This division of land into increasingly smaller territories (from national borders, to private property, to the temporary blocking-off of crime scenes) is often done in the name of security, but these images highlight the absurd and arbitrary way these territorial lines are often drawn.
