Porcelain Sumo Wrestler Figures by Olia Gorohova Show Contradiction

When you think of sumo wrestlers, you may think of strength. Sculptor Olia Gorohova has contradicted this idea by creating sumo figures from the fragile medium of porcelain.

“The essence of sumo is a fighter’s effort to push opponents out from the circle and by this action decide who is stronger. Falling means for my porcelain hero death. Therefore this project reflects the fragile nature of monumental forms,” Gorohova said.

Some of these white, unpainted figures are broken, or are missing arms. In addition to the decorative statues, Gorohova has also made some jars with lids, in the shape of a sumo wrestler’s head. Gorohova is from Oslo, Norway.
