Alone: Belhoula Amir’s Paintings Express Solitude and Introspection

Belhoula Amir ‘s Alone series of digital paintings show small, solitary figures in vast, empty areas. These images are deceptively simple at first glance. The negative space in each painting is filled with detailed but subtle patterns to represent sand, ice, snow, water, or fields of grass. The people do not have facial details (which enhances the appearance of them being far away from the viewer), but their bodies and clothes use shading to give them depth and realism. Amir uses a mix of digital and traditional techniques in his illustrations and designs. “Much of my work is based on notions of solitude and introspection, but you will also find some works who can make you smile,” he says in his profile. He is from Lyon, France.
