Mysterious Faceless Men in Paintings by Eduardo Mata Icaza

Art by Eduardo Mata Icaza

The men in these paintings and drawings by Eduardo Mata Icaza have no visible faces — they are either obscured by clothing and position, or they have been abstracted. I particularly appreciate the ones where the faces are replaced by a few brush strokes of colour. Others simply leave some of the areas unpainted, with only a sketched hint of the rest of the subject’s body. These expressionist touches contrast with the detailed, realist style used in the rest of the picture. Icaza is from Costa Rica, but now lives in France.
