Nata Metlukh: Editorial Cartoons of Urban Life

Subway Hell - Illustration by Nata Metlukh

Nata Metlukh is currently based in San Fransisco, U.S., but her illustrations have appeared in magazines in Russia and the U.K. Each of these mostly-wordless editorial cartoons captures aspects of city life in a humorous way. These expressionist images use imaginative colors and patterns and exaggerated human figures. Subway Hell shows noisy musicians, dead bodies, and man-sized rats, while Noisy Neighbors has a man looking upstairs toward a wild nighttime party. A few are images which could relate specifically to the immigrant’s or tourist’s experience in a new city:  Accents features a students in a classroom, apparently trying to learn a new language. Their different ways of speaking are demonstrated creatively by differently shaped “speech bubbles.” Photo Cliche shows people posing for pictures, holding water bottles like torches, at the Statue of Liberty.
