Children Wonder: Cute Illustrations of Kids Playing, with a Morose Twist

Children Wonder - Illustration by Takeru Toyokura

Takeru Toyokura‘s Children Wonder series of illustrations show children playing. However, things are not all fun and games, and there is an element of danger or grimness to these scenes. A shark fin heads toward children sitting on a dock, or the children sit, tied up, as a police car approaches. I think the bright colors and cute design offer a great contrast to the subtle morose aspects of the work. The process by which these collages are made is amazing: They are painstakingly planned in great detail, and then the tiny pieces are cut from felt and paper. The artist is from Osaka, Japan, where his illustrations have appeared in many books, magazines, and advertisements.
